Rail Growth
on Track
“The right mode at the right time,” has been a mantra of the Hamilton Port Authority
throughout its recent, investment-intensive years. HPA has been taking steps to ensure
that port infrastructure keeps pace with modern needs and that port users have robust
multimodal access, particularly when it comes to rail.
Two of the port’s most recent investment announcements, the new G3 Canada Ltd. Grain
terminal, and Parrish & Heimbecker’s expansion, will both feature rail service as a significant
operational component.
The growth in the number of rail cars transiting the port has steadily increased over the last
five years, from 2,938 in 2011 to 5,414 in 2015. The Port of Hamilton benefits from having
service by both CN and CP Rail service.
Port Partners Team Up to Clean Up
Thanks to all Port Partners who participated in Team Up to Clean Up on Earth Day. This
year, 78 volunteers from 15 companies worked together to collect 164 bags of garbage
and recycling, leaving port and surrounding properties cleaner and greener.
The Algoma Discovery arrived at 11:00 pm on
March 24 carrying 25,000 metric tons (MT) of
iron ore from Quebec, delivering its cargo to
ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s Pier 19.
The Hamilton Port Authority marks the start
of each shipping season with the ceremonial
presentation of a top hat to the Captain of
the first vessel. Algoma Captain Tom Higham
was welcomed to Hamilton by ArcelorMittal
Dofasco’s General Manager of Primary
Manufacturing Technology, Tom Kuhl, and
Hamilton Harbourmaster Vicki Gruber. Ms.
Gruber presented Captain Higham with the
traditional top hat, which he signed and dated,
in accordance with port tradition.
Iron ore represents the highest volume of any
commodity that transits the Port of Hamilton,
with more than 3.6 million MT of iron ore
transiting the port in 2015. The Hamilton
steelmaker also receives shipments of 1.2
million MT of coal for a total of approximately
180 vessel deliveries a year for the two raw
materials.
Cargo used by ArcelorMittal Dofasco represents
close to 60 per cent of all the cargo handled
through the Port of Hamilton.
